clogged old filter can stop fuel being filtered propperly,so ecu my raise mixture to run better i surpose, fuel filter should be changed every four years or 40 thousand miles which ever comes first,as said i changed mine and put some fuel cleaner through it and flew emmissions :y :y

Does the engine ECU report any fault codes?

Is the engine reaching the proper running temperature and doing so quickly after a cold start?

If you post the actual test readings it might be easier to diagnose. Typically, if it's only failed on the CO and the figure is not sky high (say up to 2 or 3 %), and you don't have any other factors such as poor running, trouble codes or blowing exhaust / manifold gaskets, I'd say it points to the cat.

Hi
here is the report from the MOT

Fast Idle
CO 0.76            Fail
HC 97               Pass
Lambda 1.03     Pass

2nd Fast Idle

CO 0.80            Fail
HC 97               Pass
Lambda 1.03     Pass

And the Codes from the ECU

0115 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
0403 EGR Valve
0110 Intake air Temperature
0100 Mass air flow Sensor

Since i found the codes i have put a New Engine Coolant Temp Sensor In and Swapped all the other Parts over from a Donor Vehicle.

The EM Light is no longer on but codes are still there
One last thing whilst putting the new Sensor i noticed that the PLugs for the Sensor and egr valve where swapped over.

I am now considering giving up with this and buying a new car :'(

Lambda 1.03 actually indicates a slightly lean mixture, but within the allowable range.

If it has been running with the coolant temperature sensor incorrectly wired I would say this might have damaged the cat. That's borne out by the slightly high CO and HC readings whilst everything else is OK. IMHO.

Might be worth giving it an "Italian tune up" before a re-test and see if that helps but I fear it might need a new cat (or, preferably, good 2nd hand gen one from a breaker).
