help with thermostat housing
« on: 07 October 2009, 21:46:58 »

hi

i'v just spent the day stripping my 2.6 elite (2001)to dig out bloody oil cooler thats packed in my problem is can any one tell me how to get blasted thermostat housing off? :-/

i'v undone the 2star drive studs on either side of the housing and managed to get the radiator hose off the other end but its still solid?? :-[

from the housing its a metal pipe that passes behind the timing belt casing and connects to a radiator hose (which i'v removed)i can see another star drive stud (on side of engine next to where the metal pipe )connects to the radiator hose but the power steering pumps hoses block that!!
have i gotta remove them to get this stud out to remove the thermostat?? cuz to be honest what a ball ache if so!!!

i'm getting tempted to leave the thermostate and build the engine back up.but there was alot of sludge in water pipes and i'm affraid the themostat might have suffered as a result

any feedback, comments, help is welcome and very muchly appreciated my omega driving brothers..

cheers...

Welcome to the joys of Omega ownership :)

I see you have already met bastard bolt and coolant transfer pipe ::)

I changed the thermostat on my 2.6 on Monday. I left the bolts holding my thermostat in until I had separated the transfer pipe. The bastard bolt will come out so persevere.

Once you get the bolt out you need to twist the transfer pipe 90 degrees so that its bracket will clear the dipstick.

There is a write up here on thermostat replacement but you have already done 95% of the job. http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1229464812

How I do it is leave the bastard bolt in, remove the two housing bolts, get a pair of mole grips on the housing and twiggle it, just a little bit ;D until the transfer pipe is loose. Then undo the "Bolt" :y

He's right .. I watched him do it .... thought to myself .. if I'd known that I'd have done the job myself .. :)

Then he started to put it all back together ... and the fun (and swearing) started.... :)

As I said at the time Daz ... boy was I glad you were doing it and not me !!! .... good job however ......  :y :y :y

just to say the bastard bolt is a torx not a normal hex nut, as i'm sure you've noticed. I've always been lucky in that the bolt always came undone with a 10 mill spanner when i've done the job. Others on here have not been so lucky and its rounded off.
So go easy with the wup ass. ;) Not sure there is room to get in there with the appropriate socket and small ratchet, probably not, i never had those tools available at the time.

I managed it on Monday with a 3/8 ratchet & torx bit but I had to catch it unawares. The bolt is screwed into the side of the head (which is at 30 degrees from the vertical). The heat shield on the ABS pump is in the way but is a little bit springy. Also the wiring loom to the ECU and the pipe to the power steering get in the way.

As room to swing a spanner is limited I used a 10mm swivel head ratchet spanner (c.£9). You should only have to locate it the once an ratchet away. The bolt seems to go on forever, and dont lose the little spacer.
