2.6 engine cut out
« on: 11 October 2009, 15:09:32 »

Hello All,
I really am not sure what has happened. I've got a 2.6 Elite saloon auto that I'm selling, and today a guy came down to view it and take it for a drive. He was driving it and all of a sudden the battery light flashed on, there was a clicking noise and the revs dropped to nothing and the engine cut out. There is charge in the battery, all lights, windows, radio etc work. But you get notihng from the dash. If you turn the key to position 2 no dash lights illuminate and when you try to start the engine it turns over...I think. The aux belt turns and you can hear it trying to start. No matter what, I couldn't get it going, so had it towed home.
I can't try the pedal trick as no dash lights illuminate at all. Could the clicking noise have been a fuse of relay? I looked at the fuses under the dash and couldn't see anything obvious. But I couldn't find a fuse that I thought would casue this anyway.
Any help very greatly received  :y

few thoughts, engine earth? Firstly check all the fuses under the steering wheel, see if any have blown.

Given your work in cars, might be worth investing in a cheapo tech2?

I am not thinking crank because of his battery light flashing  :-/

Cheers tunnie  :y
Engine earth? I must admit my ignorance, where should I look and what is it?

You're right, a code reader of some sorts would be pretty handy, might be the 1st thing I buy in the next few days.

The thing that puzzles me is the fact there are no dash warning lights at all, not even the handbrake light on when the handbrake is on, I've looked in the handbook and can't find a fuse for the dash lights.

Ok if nothing is showing then some fuse someware is blown, get a long set of long nose plyers, and pull the fuses, start with the middle row and work your way through. (put each one back after its checked) Next time your at the scrappy (Bloxham) empty all the Omega fuse boxes  ;D  :-X I've done that several times and got a good supply!

About a year or so back i went to start the car and had nothing, a fuse randomly blew, never done it since.

JAMES!!!
Oh, I'm glad you're back. How was the holiday? What you and tunnie don't know between you isn't worth knowing. I'm gonna try what tunnie suggested and check all fuses properly etc. If I have no joy I'll be sure to let you know  ;D
I've been giving some more thought to our business opportunity, I'll PM you later  :y

10 Days in the west end of San Antonio, in the baking sun?

I'm.... recovering ;D

but it was great!

If the engine's spinning, but there's nothing on the dash, more likely to be body earth?

A multimeter to test circuits (also about £10 for a basic one) would be a good investment.

PM me when you're ready mate, I'm more than happy to help you out....

One of the fuses under the dash had gone, I've replaced it now and it's as good as new  :y
Thank you tunnie

Baking sun???? Oh no, that's my idea of hell. Nice bit of shade for me  ;D

Which fuse number had blown?

You need to investigate why it blew in the first place, as it may re-occur.

Do the battery connections (particularly the earth, but both) get hot, when the engine has been running a few mins?
