Replacing brake discs
« on: 13 October 2009, 11:59:22 »

The front discs on my car look to be developing a bit of a ridge or lip around the outside edge so I am thinking of replacing them.

I am planning to 'upgrade' to a set of drilled/grooved discs (about £75/pr on eBay) and I was wondering if anyone else has done this.

What are the pros/cons? Does improved braking performance come at the expense of accelerated pad wear? Would I be better off sticking to the standard vented smooth type?

And yes, I am going to fit new pads at the same time.

Thanks in advance.

Standard GM spec is sufficient and at £75 a pair for drilled/grooved I`d suspect they wouldn`t be much good

OE discs & pads will set set you back about £100 using a Trade Club card and are more than capabable of stopping your car.  ;)  ;)  ;)

Agreed. I went along the 'cheap discs' route years ago for the front of my Senator (same discs as the Omega) and ended up having to buy OE when the after market discs ran out of true within about 3/4000 miles.

Buy cheap  .... buy twice as they say.

OK so the general consensus seems to be to stay with the standard type, but how about aftermark brands? I have seen a pair of Brembo discs for £90 (eBay item 390097208764), would these fit the bill? Especially as Brembo are a well-known name in the braking world!

BTW I have bought items like this before on eBay with good results.

I have also seen that there are 2 types of caliper that was used on Omegas, how do I know which ones my car has?

Thanks again (it's fantastic having a resource like this).

As stated, stick with genuine for brakes, especially on the front. Calipers are Lucas

Vauxhall do a trade club deal with front discs and pads for about £75 as opposed to discs only for just over £100. The only difference is that the Trade Club pads are a bit more dusty and some say they don't quite have the feel of the more expensive ones. I've always found them to be fine. Just did my front discs and hubs at the weekend.

"Do not buy pattern - it will end in tears - they just don't last!!"

Even the big names like Brembo, EBC, Mintex, Ferodo (no, not the Hobbit...)? Their whole business is based on producing braking products, if they weren't any good surely they wouldn't still be in business?

I know we all need to be careful because there are a lot of fake 'branded' products out there.

Thanks for the input, folks.

Gotta be genuine Vx mate ........
I recently got front discs and pads for just over a ton on trade for Markseth's tractor.
No problems with longevity, performance or quality.

As others have said, OE is more than man enough for the job...and the pattern ones WILL cause you problems.
