fault code help on traction control
« on: 08 October 2009, 19:26:12 »

after the garage wrecked my mig doing the mot and i changed the abs unit to get the light to go out i still had the TC light staying on
i have put my diagnostic machine onto the car to see if it just needs clearing and it keeps coming back on
ive saved the fault code to my laptop and this is what i get

"My Naff Code Reader" 080805 - PC based diagnostic tool

"My Naff Code Reader" - KW82 Communication Window> 1994|Omega-B|Chassis|ABS-2SE (+TC)

KW82 protocol initialized.

ECU ID= XD,90447588,0273004049,BB27355, 4,

Total number of fault codes: 1

00071 - Transmission Ratio
Present

any ideas anyone

can't think why for MOT but anything on the gearbox? Was the engine running when you did the test?

That code suggests transmission / ratio problem with is separate to the ABS / TC.

I would check all the leccy connectors are plugged in ok on the box

With your car being a manual my guess would be that the abs ecu is off an auto and hence is complaining about the lack of signal from the auto box (which the car doesn't have).
Hence the abs ecu needs a chat with a tech2 to set the variant code correctly.

How does it work out the ratio? Does it compare road speed with engine rpm? If the ABS/TC was reporting a fault would the gearbox store a fault as a consequence?

Maybe the fault will clear once the box has had a chance to work through all the gears with a working ABS/TC ecu.

i would have thought from the diff, as that knows how fast/slow each axle is spinning.

unless an ABS sensor is fubared and thus giving a false signal on how the axles are rotating.

I'd assume the TC works by comparing the speed of the none driven front wheels with the speed of the rear driven wheels. If they both accelerate at the same rate then the rear wheels are gripping ie not spinning. If the rear(s) are accelerating faster than the fronts, then the TC needs to do something.   :-/  :y
