Philippines here we come.
« on: 08 December 2007, 15:41:13 »

Well after a very long discussion with the other half we have decided were sick and tired of this country and its influx of immigrants...tax...political correctness...racism and sky high bloody cost of living.
So whilst in the Philippines last week we had a look at a few houses and decided to buy a modest end terrace house (3 bed/3 storey)...its only a very modest place but the other two houses next to it are for sale so i might at some point in the next year buy them as well.
So the plan is to sell our house here in the UK and buy the new place over there for cash (no mortgage/no rent  ) then I'm going to come back to the UK and work 6 months then Philippines for 6 months and keep switching back and forth until we have a size-able nest egg in the bank or we have bought the two houses next too us,which will (currently are) be rented out.
So this time next year i"ll be a millionaire....ok a peso millionaire but a millionaire none the less. ;D

Interesting... are you or your wife Filipinos with relatives / contacts in the country, or are you going to settle there with no previous ties to the place..? if the latter, can you say why you chose the Philippines?

As for the rest, yes there are a lot of things wrong with country, but then again no other country is perfect, and on balance I think that isn't all that bad...

Wife"s filipino and i actually feel more at home over there than here...the thought of her being 70 yrs old and me not far behind when the morgage is paid off in 30 years time really dont appeal.
Besides theres some good money to be made out there with property...unlike here the house prices increase year on year at a slow but steady rate.
Only one life and all that so i fully intend to stick my neck out and try something new. ;)

I wish you all the best of luck with this venture, a very brave thing to do, but with your wifes family being there, should be a great help for you :y

Its a real coincidence all this talk about Thailand, i was out with a few mates of mine last night, and somehow the conversation turned to Thailand.
I was then told that for 550 pound a month you could live like a king.
My Mate was thinking of leaving everything behind and going out there, i must admit it sounds very tempting ::) ::)

Yep always a but..................main issue is visa's, you still need to get a visa, and unless you were actually going to retire there, then the visa's are non resident e.g., up to 1 year, cost up to £104.00, and you still have to leave the country 3 times during that 1 year (nip across to cambodia/laos etc) just to get the passport restamped. This is so they can keep track of you :-/. If your gonna work over there you need again a permit, some folk in the past just keep going out the country every month when their visa runs out, but think they are cottonning on to that one. The wife and the kids are fine as they have Thai passports, but me I have to go through all the visa crap :(

BRJ is not far from me...im pretty much tea total now days so dont vist the pubs.

Sircrazydad i cant comment on Thailand but for a family of four to live in the philippines would work out about £200 a month and thats living fairly comfortable...assuming like us theres no morgage to pay or rent,£550 would allow you to have a house maid,a driver, nanny and all mod cons and then some £££ to spare. :)

Cant wait to get the house sold and get things moving.... :y

What sort of status do these people have in these occupations. If it's anything like the South African situation it wouldn't be acceptable to me.
The only info. I have about these countries comes from friends who haven't actually lived there, but I understand the friendliness etc. cannot be matched anywhere in the world. I fully understand the attractions of a less pressured life, but I personally couldn't give up what I have in this country.
But good luck to you if you go ahead.
