Got to fit a new reverse light switch to her manual at the weekend.

looks easy enough, unplug from side of gearbox, replace with new, and new copper washer.

question is, it sits in gearbox oil, am I going to lose any doing this? or does it only get 'wet' when the car is running?

if its sat in a bath,
will jacking from the front / rear minimise loss?


(I havent changed the box oil, and I havent got any, so dont really want any loss)

Changed mine with both fronts up on ramps with no oil loss. Easy peasy ...... !!!!!!

when i did mine the was no oil at all, just a black hole.

Hi, my X20XEV manual estate seems to have reverse lights that don't engage upon selecting reverse (most of the time, I've seen it work once or twice in the last couple of weeks or so), and there's no bulb failure message on the info display. Is this switch what's needing to be sorted?

would check wires and if they ok then change the switch, some times its just a bad connection at the plug.

on a side note, when I bought the switch, the parts man's, wife's car had just passed an MOT, 2 days later he discovered no reversing lights.

went to MOT station to complain, and was told reversing lights werent tested!

Both He and I thought if fitted, they had to work.
Got home, read the manual at : http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/mc_introduction.htm

and no, there is no mention of reversing lights for an mot!

guess having a better range will stop me being defeated in the future.

well that is funny jimbob, says all light must be tested and reverse lights are lights, what else did they not test, they test mine every time, I know cos i get the list and am usually there when they are testing her, I have the full list of MOT from DVLA what has to be tested an on there it says all lights must be working.

Strange that you say this, as I thought similarly.
BUT, my friendly MoT tester has also confirmed that the high-level brake light, (where fitted), are also not a test item.

let me make it clear....I would always fix something like this, regardless of MOT.
