Error 74
« on: 28 October 2009, 11:57:27 »

Hi everyone.  Does anyone know what causes error 74, besides the MAF sensor itself?

I was going to buy a new one but some people seem to think that this might not fix error 74.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! :-*

Could it be the EGR valve?

have you look'd in side the MAF, should see 2 glass strips with copper on them, should shine back at you, replaced mine as the copper had gone green, when took it apart after getting a new one and it had burnt out, usually if somthing else has gone would throw up more codes like throttle or egr or air temp would think so any way :y :y

Phwoar... erm <blinkers on>

74   Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage High

I'd be surprised if it was the EGR, to be honest./ You could always try blanking off the EGR by cutting out a section of coke can to bolt down between the valve and the mounting flange.

If you can get it to a tech 2 it might be useful to see the live data. See what the MAF is reading.

Failing that, try unplugging the MAF and take it for a little drive. It'll probably throw more fault codes but it will substitute limp-home values for the data and, if the running issues improve, might point to a bad MAF.

I assume this is the only code you are getting? It can come up spuriously in combination with other problems.

I changed the MAF for a used one and the strips look quite shiney.  The car runs fine now so far but I still get code 74.

I wanted to try and get it sorted in case something else goes wrong and my mig breaks down.

Thanks for your help! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

You will continue to get 74 until the car has been started 20 times.  Then it will clear as long as the problem has gone away :y
