Many a problem , please help
« on: 24 October 2009, 20:31:46 »

Hi guys just joined as just got an omega , nothing flash just to get to work and back , thought i was getting a bargain only paid £250 for it off ebay , yes another ebay disaster , bloke sold it too me without mot and tax however had fail sheet for mot , sorted out the problems mainly bad earths as it was electrical , now there are just 3 problems tyres and rear shock , emmisions.
So this is the problems , ok tyres not a problem however on getting the car home and not checking my own stupid fault i have no locking wheel nut key , the locking bolts have a spinning disc on them so cant get a scoket on them and they have 3 holes in , looks  like a socket with 3 prongs goes on them and removes , any ideas how to get them off,

shock cheap and easy i think to do ,

now the big one , i thought the emmisions were because the car had been stood for 6 months before went for test however having a look tonight this is what i found ,
coolant has disapered , not leaked onto floor its just gone , also went to take spark plugs out and put new ones in and the tops where covered and i mean nearly full onto the ht leads with oil , has the head gone , can it be done by a diyer , have loads of tools , need any special ones .
everything else on the car is spot on its a 2.0l auto 1996 p reg , please help as i drove this car back and was gonig to fix and sell now i want to keep it and get rid of my subaru!! all help would be great cheers guys

Sounds like the cam cover gaskets have failed for a start. Not a huge job to replace. Be sure to clean out the breathers while you're at it as these often cause the failure in the first place.

I have had the locking wheel nut problem myself. what you need is an 18 mm 1/2 " drive socket, a long extension and a lump hammer. Fit the socket to the extension and place the socket square on the locking nut and hit the extension very hard several times with the lump hammer. you will feel it going on and you will feel it when it is fully home. Then undo with a breaker bar or similar :y

i tried hitting a socket onto it , it went on but there is a spinning disc bit of metal round the bolt head which just spins so it made the socket spin , the bolt is perfectly round and dont wanna damage the alloys cheers for your help

Try a smaller socket - it does work, it compresses the ring as it were:y you wont damage the alloys if you use an extension

not sure were you live ???? i worked for marshall volvo a couple of years ago and they had a locking wheel nut removal tool it was like a big hole punch the end was circular and very sharp basically you smacked it onto the locking wheel nut hard and it cut/dug into it and had teeth on the inside so it gripped

Coolant loss is most likely to be a broken Heater Bypass Valve (HBV), assuming that your car has aircon, and therefore has one.  Look in the Maintenance Guides or Common Problems sections for info on diagnosis/replacement.

Camcover gasket is around £20 from Vauxhall, and don't buy it (and accompanying o-rings) from anywhere else.

I don't think the fact that the aircon is working well rules out the HBV being leaky, can't say for sure, I don't have one.

Not worth a lot as scrap or parts I'd think.

Camcover gasket change isn't hard, cleaning the breathers (essential) actually takes longer and is fiddlier.  Guides for all these things should be easy to find on here.
