Headlamp Washers ? !
« on: 24 October 2009, 23:46:37 »

 :(
Anybody know how to turn-off/isolate the headlamp washers
on a Facelift (2001) ? ?

Yes, they're all very nice but they use up the washer
fluid at an incredible rate this time of year ! !

I have to drive TO work in the dark, and, HOME in the dark.
The A12 is getting salty/grimy now and so i have to use me
windscreen washers a few times each trip. BUT i DON'T
need the headlamp ones firing every time !!

I mean, the Moggie headlamps don't actually get dirty ANYWAY (slippery shape ? still nice and smooth ?)

I know the FUSE is running several other things  :(
but is there a RELAY or can i pull 1 wire JUST for the
H/L washers ??????

On the prefacelift cars there is a fuse next to the relay in the triangular fuse/relay box under the bonnet ... No2? I pulled it out on mine & it stops the washer pump from pumping/washing  :y  :y

Just bear in mind that working headlight washers is a legal requirement of having Xenons though......

Cant imagine a copper pulling you for it, but nonetheless it would fail an MOT if they didnt work.......

i heard on  form some were that you can get a delay relay that stops the head light washers from working at same time, would that be better than taking it out as some time you would need to clean lights.

A couple of other cars with headlight washers that I've had experience of in recent years  (Focus, Mondeo, 3 series), only wash the headlights on every, say, 10th wash of the windscreen.

I had this exact same problem. What you could look to do would be to put a switch & fuse in the place of the current (sorry about the pun) fuse. By having the switch inside the car somewhere you could switch the headlight washers on and off at will as you drove along. Having the switch inside the bonnet is also possible, but you would obviously not have that control as you drove.

It would be very simple to do as if you used male spade connectors the new wiring would just plug in place of the fuse.

You just need to be careful that the wiring is upto the job and that the live side of the circuit has the fuse as close to the fuse box as possible. An alternative would be a relay.

Hope this all makes sense.

Too grey an area. It's a leagal requirement for manufacturers to design & fit them on new cars with HID's but I'm pretty sure the the law hasn't yet caught up with aftermarket & retrospective fitting.

I've never had mine checked, infact I don't think they were opperational when last MOT'd

Lots of things are on a car for a reason, front fog lights, heated seats etc etc but they're not a legal requirement.  ;)

No but washers for HID's are, i have seen the loss in light when driving with HIDs in winter, when you run out of fluid.

Just fill up the washer bottle!

Found a pic of the fuse under the bonnet  :y

I'll pull that for now ta.

I realise they're are good idea but the headlamps just DON'T get dirty like the screen does  :-?

My old Sierra had little washer jets and tiny wipers on the
headlamps and THEY worked a treat !

What was wrong with THEM ?!?!? (maybe the roundness of
the modern lights i suppose ?)

Thanks for replies fellas (ladies).

Might sound stupid, but can't you turn the headlights off, then run the washer and then turn headlights back on. Maybe like when you're sat at the traffic lights.
