If you're concerned you could always put something like this on the autobox sump just to see how hot it's getting:

I think you will get a gearbox warning on the MID if the fluid genuinely overheats. ECU certainly monitors fluid temperature. I have towed up to the maximum towing load over some steep hills with the standard cooler setup without a murmur.

I visited a gearbox specialist for an oil change as I didn't fancy an ATF bath and asked his opinion... No extra cooling required.

And this guy knows his onions... He does all the main dealer work for about 100 mile radius :y :y

I read somewhere recently that, for a high-mileage auto box, changing the atf can have negative results. Something to do with the contaminants in the fluid helping the worn clutch packs get more grip? The item (I'll try and find it again) recommended just topping up, or using some of that atf additive stuff (Lucas etc).

What think you?

Mine had done about 140k when it was changed and was (and still is) fine.

Sounds like an advert for additives to me ::) ::)

I have to say that an air oil cooler, to me, is a backward step from the oil/water one used

Exactly. Contaminants in the old oil shouldn't get past the filter so how would they get to the clutches?

Sounds like a garage excuse for avoiding a messy job to me!  ;D

So what would you recommend for a fluid & filter change with brake(?) band adjust - Vx service (Masterfit), local garage or specialist auto g/box servicer?

I'd use a gearbox specialist every time, or DIY. Not a hard job... Just messy!
