2.2 Crank Pully Timing

Got all the kit together and about to replace the belt kit on my 2.2 (and water pump)

What i can't work out is how the timing is supposed to work on the crank pully? Looking at it, there were 4 notches in each corner, with a smaller once, like a nik almost at the bottom.

Its at TDC with the cams aligned, when fitting the belt the timing is only adjusted with the tensioner?  :-/ :-/ :-/

on these, cams align with markings, and mark on pulley i thought was straight down - though I'm doubting latter, as yours wasn't when I looked (If i'm right, reckon you're one tooth out - which may help explain its lacklustre performance)

Well with these its either bang on or a tooth out so i don't think i can mess it up too badly  ;D

Does the Book of BS say how it should be - eg, facing downwards, or lining up with another mark somewhere?

mine has 4 marking on cam two rizen on both sides, and two each side with markings on, left side just off center right on center, left set inlet, right outlet, other 4 are piston set to middle. is that what you are meaning?

I thought, as the title of thread said crank, we were talking about crank pulley, not cams.

I did my 2.2 timing belt and stuff 2 weekends ago. When the cam sprockets were at TDC I found that the 'notch' on the crank sprocket was at the 6 oclock position. Haynes (2.0) book says to line this notch up with the oil pump cutout. I didn't see this on my 2.2 (doesn't mean it wasn't there though!) The engine had ran fine before so I assume this was the right position. I got the cam lock tool in ok in this position.
Hope this helps.
Also, the water pump can be a bit vague as the book mentions lining up the lug on the side of the pump with the corresponding recess in the engine block. I was scabby-eyed looking for this but could onle see a corresponting recess in the timing belt back plastic cover. I assumed this to be the mark and used it. It all seems to be ok.  I think there are some subtle differences between the 2.0, for which the book was written and the 2.2

Just had a look in the guides for a 2.2 cambelt chage.  Nothing listed from what I can see.

acura - Thanks for that, yes my 'notch' was in the 6 o'clock position too. Did you use a genuine pump?

I just took a photo of the pump i got from my local stealer (GM)

There is a large lug at the top, did yours have this?

Damn camera focused on the keyboard...



Skruntie - Yup, will get some pictures as i go, i find they make a guide so much easier when you see what has to be done / removed  :)

Rusty i mean the marking on the crank pulley, not the cams.

I got a Contitech belt kit and a KWP pump from eurocarparts. There were 2 pumps available at £18 and £30-odd. I enquired as to the difference and was told the KWP was orig equip. Can't be sure tho. It looks just like your photo.

As I said previously, the tab on the pump is said to line up with recess in the block, on my 2002 2.2 I found no recess and was scratcching my head for a while. Then I spotted a recess in the plastic rear timing belt cover which matched the tab on the pump. I used that and all seems well. As the water pump pully is 'offset' to the main pump casting it's important to get this right. The tab on my pump went at about the 10 oclock position.

Ta, yup it did. Once all of nothing 'jumped' out as the main cause, it was either the water pump or the tensioner, i think was more the water pump. Which is annoying as its only 2 years and 27k old!
