Hi folks
I have had my 98 td estate man since feb and have sorted out most of its niggles , she now starts first time and the eml light stays off nearly all the time (diesel magic).
Next on list is chipping ,now my question is is it possible to tell if it has been done already? To be honest the performance is pretty lively already although i am not sure what to measure it against our other car is a 1.9 jtd fiat and they are about comparable at the moment, should the miggy be noticably better? can i open up and look at chip?what am i looking for if i do?
any thoughts anyone?

EML, try paperclip test, some TD's are clipable.

TD Chips, worth doing for more power and better MPG but only if you have a Manual Box.

Aready Chipped, probably not if its a Auto, you can take the ECU apart and look at the Eproms, someone may have bothered to label them (Superchips do) but Im guessing no give away and not labelled.

Why not go on some meets (see Meetings Section) and have a chat with some other OOF'ers with TD's to compare.

Thanks for input , i am familer with paperclip test etc and am quite happy with how she is running, i guess what i am asking is before i open up chip housing etc am i going to be able to identify a standard chip as oppose to a retro fit?

No your not, thats why I said earlier unless someone has bothered to label it, There not chip's as such but eproms (memory), so the actual eprom is the same type just programed differently, so its going to have the same chip name and type on it.

The oringinal eproms may have a ident label on them (normally silver foil type) but Ive seen originals that are blank.

People like Superchips and Courtenay put there own labels on and sometimes there piggy backed into another PCB with some addintional chips to prevent copyright.

Another giveaway could be if its a 'solder in' eprom (rather than push in), then chances are its original, unless someone has desoldered and soldered a different one, in which case you should be able to spot this.

Take the ECU apart and have a look.

Do take a note of the Auto / Manual Box thing though, if 2.5 TD Auto's are Chipped, the Gearbox wont last long.

there may be a way to tell quite easily!!
every 98 car i have come across has had a soldered chip in it, if it has been chipped then it will have a chip holder in it???

As already said, 'do not chip an auto' the AR25 auto box is not made to take the extra BHP.

but you're right, it will kill ar25 quickly.  I think mrs omegatoy almost managed 100 miiles

If the sticker on both eproms looks the same, chances are, its std chip. If one of them is different colour/font/printer, chances are its modified
