hi, my 2.6 sounds a bit rattly even when warmed up like the tappets or somthing, i was advised to put some kind of special oil additive into it to loosen them up has anyone heard of this and is it safe to use, i know the car has been looked after and always had regular oil changes, any ideas lads, thanks  :-?

Some lifter treatment (WYNNS Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment ) is quite safe, and can be used. Nothing beats regular oil changes though.

Make sure its not a leaking exhaust manifold.

I've put some of the Wynn's Lifter Treatment in my 2.6 as I had a lazy tappet - okay a lot of the time, but came to light during the cambelt change, usually appears if I'm doing short runs. Popped it in, and after about 5 minutes, the tapping went - never come back since It's about £7.99 at any decent motor factors - has various good reviews on the Internet, but obviously won't cure any underlying mechanical issue.
As tunnie says, regular oil changes are best - James filled up mine with nice clean VX stuff, but the liquid he drained out looked just like brown washing up liquid.... - and it had only been done a couple of thou earlier by the scabby used car dealer I bought it off

Is the 2.2 prone to the valve lifter problem as well?
I get a slight tap after a cold start which goes after a few seconds. The engine quietens considerably on warming but I guess this is normal for every engine.

Mines a bit tappety when cold, i am just putting it down to age and miles. Its quite enough (for a 4 pot) when warm.

I was listening to my 2.2 after a 10 mile run and was surprised at how 'ticky' the engine sounded. If the revs were raised a little it went very quiet. It doesn't sound like lifters, it's not from the front of the engine (I've just changed the belt, pump and rollers anyway) but appears to be from the upper right hand side looking to the front of the car. Is this where the injectors live?
I had a Nissan Laurel years ago with a zillion miles on the clock but the only engine noise came from the injectors.
I'm not worried about the noise, just curious. Gonna get some Wynnes anyway.

Any ideas?

My 2.2 is exactly the same-noisy top right had side ticking, worse on start up, quietens off, never goes totally away.

Have done 2 short semi synth oil changes and given it a hot 400 mile run, changed the catalytic converter, still the same.

I suspect a slight leak on the manifold, so gasket is on order.
Will update-if this does not cure, will try engine treatment.

Now you mention it the noise from cold could be a manifold leak which lessens but still there when hot.
Keep me posted with any results.

On 2.2 petrol, looking towards windscreen, manifold is under shiny heat-shield on right hand side of engine.
