« on: 15 November 2009, 14:55:49 »

yesterday i was given the number of an ex vauxhall mechanic and told hes yer man.ive just spoken to him and explained how my box wont select 1st or go throuigh the gears when in d but i can manually select all the gears and he said is yer eml on(yes) and he said the last one he had like that was caused by the crank sensor ive no reason to doubt him and was wondering if anyone else has had thisand is it an easy job to try another :)

errr he's talking crap, crank sensor (code 19 if you paperclip *edited, you can't paperclip) will cause the engine to stall and then eventually die, not allowing it to start. It would not affect gear shifts, if it did, would put it in limp mode (rev limit 4k)

I would suggest checking the ATF fluid level (should be at the drain plug on a level surface with the engine running) also cleaning the selector switch on the gearbox, thats your most likey causes

Its fairly easy to remove, some contact cleaner would do the job.

Might be worth investing in a cheapo tech2 off eBay (£30) if you have a laptop  :y

I have seen a dodgy crank sensor signal put an autobox into limp. (Short in a poor pro LPG install)

The signal is used so the gearbox knows what RPM the engine is doing.

Same signal used for rev counter as well.

I'd give that selector switch a clean! Even if the crank sensor was failing, you would still get all gears, but limited to 4k rpm

Just a thought, could it be an issue with the winter button wiring.

Just trying to help.

That would cause the similar problems, ie always pull off in 3rd when in D.

But it if you put the box in 1st that should overide it, and pull off in 1st.

Check the snowflake button on the passenger side of the gear selector

if that had a fault it would select 3rd,when i manually select 1st it would over ride it then put it in d it would think winter mode again yes a possibility.i wonder if i took a wire off it would cancel it out or would it put a break in the circuit

My sons 3 litre facelift, the snowflake button broke and was jammed in.  Removing the broken bits of plastic jamming it in solved the 3rd gear/manual select liftoff prob.  Would also be looking at the selector on the side of the gearbox, as said. :)
