Guts of the HBV

Just wondering, has anyone dissected one of these pesky Heater Bypass Valves to see how they work and analysed the various possible failure mechanisms?

I'm guessing its a vac-powered flap valve, but never having seen one, except the outside of them in pics, I'm intrigued.

Someone must have taken a hacksaw to a duff one?

There's a diaphragm inside that the vacuum pulls or not pulls to divert water one way or t'other. The diaphragm perishes.  ;)

Thanks Andy, I'm sure you're right.

I was hoping to go into a bit more detail about how it comes to leak, whether the thing can jam in the 'no heat' state, etc.

Anyone got a duff one I could have a go at?

Mine got so encrusted due to the last owner not putting enough antifreeze in . it got stuck.
You don't need to hacksaw it if carefull i think you cn get it apart without too much damage.
