hydraulic lifters - are they the same in 2.5/3.0?
« on: 21 November 2009, 15:30:50 »

hi. Just working on some heads and noticed that despite the same inlet valves the lifters on the 2.5 are a slightly different design to the 3.0 ones. The size and top are the same, but the base/internals look different. The 2.5 are a shallower dish around the spring and the 3.0 are deeper with spring protruding.

no pic as i am posting from mobile but question is are there differences cos of a reason e.g. Different pressures to apply, or is it just the later ones have an improved design? can they be swapped around and use the good 3.0 ones on the 2.5?

For any particular year all Ecotec cam followers are the same. They do vary by year though.

Iirc, the ones with the obvious metal plate inside are early, the ones with the deeper inside are later.
You can mix them but the later type have improved internals.
The T vents in the heads must match the block (oil pump). These are the torx headed 'bolt' about mid way along the upper edge of each head.....these act as an oil flow restictor to the cam bearings and cam followers.....when the oil pump capacity was improved the T vents were changed to match.
If you put later heads onto an early block you must also use the original T vents.
The T vents are obviously different in length, I think the later ones have smaller dia. cross drillings. Perhaps someone else can confirm this.
