Problem solved! All running sweet again. All I have to do now is complete the job by removing old unit and permanently installing the new one. A right PITA of course. Already cut me thumb just removing the leads!

Be interesting to see if I was ripped off with a cheapo dis pack when the garage did it 42k ago. Looked at the old bill, they charged £120 for the pack plus labour three and a half years ago.

Old unit out, what a job! Must get my 6 year old grandaughter to help next time (small hands). It was a Bosch unit and externally it looked ok except for some evidence of dried water residue around two of the terminals (socket end). On my car the HBV is under the drivers side and some way from the dis pack and I replaced it about 10k ago as a precaution in any event. Had a feel all around and couldn't find any damp areas elsewhere. My guess is that it's rain water leaking through from the scuttle. The join in the two parts of the scuttle is just above the dis pack. Anthing I can do before I put it back together again?

All back together. Talk about a shoe horn job. Next time I'd take a few more bits and pieces off as the dis pack only just fitted into the gap at the back of the engine. Had to feed it in downwards at a certain point, turn it as feeding it and finally it went in. Just waiting for the next problem now. Thanks for all comments and offers of help.
