put your right foot hard on brake pedal (not pressing very very very hard) start engine and using left leg put into second gear and slowly lift your left foot off the clutch DON'T let the car move.
if it stalls when your foot is between 1/4 to 3/4 the way up clutch ok.
if the engine doesn't stall or cluth slips then it knacked.
do not rev engine when trying the above.
also reving the engine at 2000-3000 rpm whilst car not in motion and trying to engage a gear with clutch down isn't a very good idea you just burn up the thrust bearing.
if the clutch is ok i'd check for air lock

It does sound like clutch drag. Bleeding the clutch slave on an Omega is a right pain.

I once had the flexible hose fail which dumped all the fluid from the slave cylinder. Managed to drive home by starting in gear & doing clutchless gearchanges.

To change the flex hose you have to drop the gearbox so lets hope it is just air in the system.

The other causes of clutch drag are broken fingers/springs or friction material in the clutch or a damaged spigot bearing.

Ah that takes me back to an Austin Princess I once had  ;D

Just a little observation but if you rev the engine and then try to put it in to gear then that might well be the cause of the problems.

Gearboxes have syncromesh on all forward gears these days to try and get them moving at the same speed to mesh smoothly - revving the engine counteracts this so not a good idea

have just done this and car stalled about 3/4 of the way up so could it be air in the highdraulic system
