Transmission Transplant Possible?
« on: 07 December 2009, 13:02:32 »

Okay, so I have a '96 Omega B with a faulty transmission, and the donor car is a '94 Omega B.
Just wondering whether there are any incompatibilities between the two cars' engines (X25XE and X30XE respectively)?

What I want to do is take the trans out of the 3.0 Opel and replace the dying one on my 2.5 . Is it as simple as just dropping it in, or do I have to transplant, say, the entire engine?

They're both autos, and look more-or-less identical internally.

Sorry, I'm not really familiar with cars, so if you need anything more specific to be able to help, you may need to ask me.
Thanks!

the 3 litre automatic gearbox is stronger than the 2.5 one, but otherwise identical, and can be used in place of the 2.5 one.

You'll need the torque converter (and I think the flywheel) off the donor too.

I thought they were the same on the v6 ones?

Automatics don't have a flywheel, do they?

Be hard to start the engine without one ;) They're not like a manual flywheel which is more butch to mount the clutch but they are there and have the starter ring gear round them.

It's not a flywheel though (as in a device to keep the engine running smoothly), its just a starter ring and something to bolt the torque converter to.  I think.  I will submit to your superior knowledge though  :-[

Flywheel on manuals and Flexi plate on autos as listed on EPC.

The Flexi Plate is the same on both the 2.5 and 3.0 but the torque converter is different

Sweet, thanks for the help.
Managed to obtain the 3 components (Gearbox, Torque converter and flexi plate) second-hand for about $430USD (600NZD). Just got to wait for them to arrive now.
