Looks like I have a bit of a problem but want to make sure first.
Yesterday while driving my temp gauge never got over 80 degrees. It was open road without traffic, and was pretty cold (0 to 5 degrees) but the temp gauge was too low at least I think so.
Is this pointnig to thermostat stuck open or could this running temp be ok.
Any other way to check the thermostat?

Was the top radiator hose hot to touch,as it could just be the gauge giving false readings.Also you say it was cold,but do you mean you had no cabin heat,or was it less heat from heater than you have previously had ?

yours is doing exactly what mine was doing, new stat solved it

Heating seems ok. Although don't use heating much so can't be sure. Is there any how to on 2,2 thermostat. Saw the one for v6 but didn' see for 4pot

No, i forgot to take photos when i did my stat 

Its easy-peasy though, as you look at the engine, from the front, its on the passenger side, its simply 2 bolts holding it in, take them out and off it comes! Might be worth draining the coolant first.

Its WAY easier than the V6 one i have yet to do, got to strip half the engine down to reach the bugger

Ok that means my drivers side.
One more thing Tunnie. I looked at ebay and saw that they sell thermostat + housing + gasket.
Do I need to change the housing also?
And where actually on the side is the thermostat if you can explain alittle. I lend a car to a friend so cannot check in the next few day but would like to have a idea what to expect if I'm going to change it.

sorry yes, drivers side for you  - Right side of the engine 

The thermostat / housing is one unit, you replace the whole lot, i am not sure if you can replace the stat on its own, but when you buy them, they come with the housing anyway. Gasket is just a rubber 0-ring, well it was on mine anyway.

If you can wait 10 mins for it to stop bl00dy raining here, i will nip out and take a photo and refresh my memory

Its then two torx bolts, to remove, the main coolant pipe, and the smaller one.

Drop the coolant first, then simply unbolt, its easy peasy

If you want to check the stat before ripping the thing apart you could try this ...

Start engine from cold  .. ie overnight ..., with heating turned off.... leave to idle whilst resting a hand on the top pipe, the one from the stat to the radiator.

IF the water very gradually warms up .. the stat is failed open.

IF the water stays cold for a longish time then suddenly you get a surge of warmth, the stat is working.

Crude but effective, however it does NOT check the temperature at which the stat is working, which could be the problem.
