Heated seat
« on: 23 December 2009, 12:28:42 »

Driver's side seat heater runs on full power even when "1" selected.

Any ideas where to start looking? (In order of "easiest to check" first please! :))

if you have leather 1 is plenty hot enough, less of an effect on cloth. I put it on 1 if leather, 3 if cloth

I think OP means that he has no thermo regulator when using the 1-5 switch settings

Thats better than those last 2 posts you deleted.

Still not sure you have it...been on the Sherry & mince pies?

wheel set to no1......seat far too hot.

Therefore sounds like a thermostat issue.

Gary, does the temperature further increase on going to 2,3,4 or 5?  or is it a case of the seat heater is just on or off with no thermostatic control?

Welcome to seat heaters! As i mentioned with leather it gets hot quickly and straight away, never noticed much of a difference with the settings.

With cloth its a bit more noticable, but still roasts your arse quickly.

Looks like I could have worded my question a bit better! One or more of us have been hitting the mince pies and sherry a bit too hard methinks!

Ok, here goes. What it always used to do was this: Position 1 - just off the cold; position 2 - comfortably warm; position 3 - uncomfortably warm; position 4 - hot; position 5 - roasted nuts!

What it does now is: position 1 to 5, roasted nuts! All switch positions result in the same heat setting - ie full on. It only now has two settings - off and too Firkin hot (note that this is the Imperial 'Firkin' measure - I don't do metric!).

I have cloth seats by the way. (I didn't mention this before as I didn't think it mattered - the seat element is working perfectly!)

So what components do I have in the system? The element is ok and I guess the switch is too. Which leaves - I guess - the control circuitry conprising some electronics in one or more PFM boxes, a relay or two (or four) and 'normal' and/or safety (over)heat sensors? Where are they all and which is most likely to fail?

Quick look in Tis shows....

Switch itself could be faulty, S55 drivers, S30 passengers

relays k184 for drivers and k183 for passengers

temp sensor P90 drivers, P87 passengers

where these bits are...I dont know sorry, but swapping any over may transfer the problem and help the diagnosis

A word of caution. If you have an airbag in the side of the seat then disconnect the battery 20 minutes before touching any of the electrical connectors under the seat.

Lots of people have triggered the airbag warning lamp by unplugging the wrong connector with the battery connected (and it needs Tech2 to reset it, it won't reset itself)

I bet nobody has a circuit diagram I could take a look at? Is the heater power controlled using a simple resistor cascade (I doubt it) or electronically (eg mark-space ratio)?
