About 1" & a half diameter and 4" long? Electric water pump for the winter pack heating, it helps circulates water around the heater matrix to get heat into the cabin ASAP.  ;)

I'd be looking more at a blocked heater matrix, particularly if driven for a while with blocked oil cooler

Not sure, I don't have one on my car. You sure your matrix is completely unblocked after your cooler failed?  :-/

This might be handy ..... http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1185891036 Use a hose pipe till the water runs clear, even then though, you can't be certain that you have water flowing through all of the cores. (click here)
Forte coolant flush has been used by various member with positive results. clicky
