Project Gamble - Update and issues
« on: 26 December 2009, 12:53:13 »

Well Goldie is up and running now, currently on flush number 3 and the coolant is still fairly murky.

The oil cooler had blown and I think the previous owner had run the engine a fair bit keeping the battery charged et al......  All that has been changed and refitted, the recent thaw has allowed me to continue where I left off.

A couple of issues:

1) No heat coming into the cabin.  I have tested the vacum and even pulled the vacum pipe going in the hbv, sucked on it and no change.  The matrix pipes going into the bulkhead are cold so I think the matrix itself is sludged up unless the HBV is fubarred?

I am thinking of taking one of the matrix pipes off and shoving a hose in there, has anyone else tried this?

2) Air leaking out of the base of the EGR.  there was some moisture around the base and there is clearly an airleak there, I guess that requires replacement?  Or will refitting do?

All advice is appreciated :y

Only flush 3? Report back on flush 33  ;D

Its going to need a lot of flushing, capful, and only a small capfull of bleach will help break up the oil.

Hose in the heater matrix is a good idea, if its been driven with oil cooler failure its going to be donald ducked.

Also check the condition of the rad, that will have gunged up too

Yeah I guess it's gonna take a lot of flushing.  I am using that traffic film remover which seems to be working quite well.

Looking at the matrix bulkhead hoses it looks like they are some kind of quick release but I am unsure as to how they come off.  The book of lies isn't helping either... anyone know?

Edit: just found the how-to   :-[ :-[

Iirc I flushed mine at least 10 times after replacing the oil cooler.I did drive it for over a week with the cooler leaking though,I had little choice as I was working every night with not enough gap between shifts to get the parts and fix it etc.It didnt seem to do any long term damage though as 6 months after doing the work everything is still running sweet. :y

Well took off HBV  and all the pipes flushed them in the sink.  Wired the hose into the matrix and flushed it through a few times.  Whipped everything back on and hey presto warm, not hot, air.  Flushed the whole thing a few times and its getting better.  Will do some more flushes tomorrow until the whole thing gets better and then reconnect the propshaft.

..otherwise...she's a runner gents  :y

Worth sealing the EGR as it could cause incorrect fuelling as it's pre-Lambda sensor. IIRC it's just a copper gasket under it so probably needs a replacement or bodge with some sealant / section of coke can.

You guessed right, I noticed that until it gets warm it runs very rich.  Been drinking some pop last night to do the bodge today....should I blank it off from the plenum too?

Well after losing the old doughnut from the driveshaft (dont ask) I thought I would just fit one from an old gearbox I have in the garage.  Turns out its a different size!  :o

So on the lookout for a doughnut (the larger type!)

Keep an eye on the water hoses, if its had oil in it for a while then the hoses go soft and can burst without warning. Top hose and the one from head to HBV seem particularly vulnerable for some reason.

Cheers for that warning bud :y

I was thinking of replacing some if not all the pipes eventually anyways

Ok!  Thanks to Robsey's donut Project Gamble is moving!

Initially a bit sluggish, looks like the multi rams arent working, traced to the vuccum tank fitting.  She picked up a bit later on but the steering pump was making a lot of noise, low fluid level.  Once topped up and few full-locks in both directions and some more topping up that was sorted.

Areas of concern:

-Wishbones
-Drop links

Jobs left to do before MOT:

-Blank off EGR with coke can
-bodge vaccum tank fix
-Fix air leak around ICV
-Fix washer jets

I is one happy bunny ;D
