Omega TD water pump replacement - advice pls
« on: 09 December 2009, 18:01:51 »

Hi All
Can anyone give me a brief guide to replacing the water pump on the turbo diesel 2.5TD?
My car has just gone into the red, boiled off some coolant and even after cooling down for 5 mins, goes straight back in the red. Drives fine as normal accept for the stopping every 2 mins!!  :'(
Thanks
Jon

How long was it in the red on the temp gauge? When stripping down you need to inspect the head carefully, as they do tend to crack when they over-heat.  :'(

I'd drop Omegatoy a PM for info on changing the pump, he knows the TD engine inside out  :y

Its was in the red for about 30 to 60 secs top. I then kept it below that by driving 1 min, stopping for 5. Luckily i was only 5 mins from home!
Will now strip out the pump . £54 from partco for new one.
PM to Omegatoy.
thanks all

Hi All
Pump is out and is defo the issue! see pic:

Just hope the rest of the engine is ok. Got all but 2 bits of the impeller out. Just cant see them or drag them out with wire.   :-[
BTW: no need to remove radiator. Only have to remove turbo pipe, viscous fan, aux belt and pump pulley. Use the pump bolts in spare threaded holes to push pump out.
cheers

To get the offending bits of impeller out, I removed the thermostat, then jammed rags into the orifice. Removed the top hose from the rad; and stuck the garden hose into the top inlet.
Voila! - offending bits floated out once the block filled with water.

After the rebuild, best to add a 5 litre can of Vx genuine red antifreeze, then top-up with clean water. Cooling system capacity is 10 litres, so you've then got a 50% mix strength.

What make is your replacement water pump bud?
Where did you obtain it, and how much?

Water pump is from Partco @ £56.99 inc VAT, Part# UGCGWP2585. Make: First Line
Veg oil is easy, buy 3 litre bottles from tesco, mix 50:50 with diesel in the tank, drive! Smells gorgeous, drives as well. No mods to the car except for new fuel filter before using it. Been running her on 50:50 for 20k miles (3 years).

Glad you're sorted.

Little warning to all tractor owners - don't let the temp hit the red, and if it does, stop immediately (not in a couple of miles!).  Like all BMW engines, the heads are incredibly prone to cracking if overheated

Thanks for this - I'll look at getting one as a contingency measure.
The price is reasonable too, given that a 'usual' jobbie with plastic impellor is around the 50 quid mark.

Thanks again mate!
