those vac tubes again....sorry
« on: 02 January 2010, 22:27:11 »

Wishing everybody a happy 2010.

Found one with a hole,  fixed it. Heater flaps ok mainly. However long uphills...the blow goes away to nothing. Under full throttle acceleration is not as good as using the peddle so the m-rams affected....ideas!

Does your setup have a vac tank mounted on the bottom of the front inlet bagpipes?

Sounds like your "vac tank" is not holding vaccuum.

Quick bit of theory...  :)

The vaccum is "produced" by the pistions "sucking" on the induction stroke, the maximum vaccuum is produced when the throttle is closed (tickover) as they "suck" against a closed hole. At Wide Open Throttle (WOT) there is minimum vacuum as the pistons suck from an open hole.
(and if you are old like me and remember vaccuum wipers you remember having to lift off the throttle to get the wipers to work !!!)

To get around this problem modern cars have a "vacuum tank" fitted which gives a "reserve" of vacuum for when you are at WOT.

So IMHO...  it is either ... your pipe to the vac tank blocked/disconnected so you don't empty the vac tank ..... or the vac tank is leaking and not holding vaccuum

I'm probably wrong in which case an expert will pass by and correct me shortly ..  :)

EDTIT : In fact said expert has already stepped in ..  :)  (must learn to type faster !!)

Lol, we need to know which setup it is first.....as many know, I dont subscribe to the '2 things failing at once' scenario and hence I suspect it might be the earlier type with no vac tank on the inlet bagpipes.  :y

My first one only had the one under the scuttle, this one has 2. When the one on the rad broke, I just joined the pipes. Dont do this, doesnt run well. Was much better after I was sent another from one of the breakers on here.

i have the tank low down on the right which i replaced about 8/9 years ago... it just had one of the tubes dangling then. i understand now there is one by the pollen filter. could this also be a part of the problem and is it possible to check/ test?

Nah .. mine was modern ... 918 cc sidevalve engine, split front windscreen 1952 Morris Minor, had a heater but no radio and the first time I got it above 60 mph - Birdlip Hill - I nearly shat myself when I realised the brakes actually were not very good ......   :(

Vacuum wipers? Bugger me, I though I was the only one who could remember them. Worst idea ever and they were and no good at all uphill in a thunderstorm!  Brilliant down a steep hill on throttle overrun though, they nearly threw themselves off!
Good old days, but I love my Mig...........
Semaphore indicators too - Got to get off here you guys are making me feel like I should be 'boxed up'!
Anyone ever stamped on the old floor mounted dipswitch and their foot has gone through the floor? No wonder they brought in mot's.
