Washer Jets
« on: 03 January 2010, 14:15:08 »

Windscreen Washer jets bunged up on me last night, it can't be the gauze in the tank, i am getting water to the jets.

Drivers side, 1 of the 2 jets bunged, i stipped the scuttle down checked all the pipe work and gave the jet a clean with a pin.

But on the way to work it failed again, i think something is lodged in the back of the jet someware, passenger side is very weak too, one jet was strong, but again, fiddling with it made it worse.

Going to strip it down fully on Tuesday and drop the jets in some hot water, but was wondering on replacements?

Does anyone with TIS / Trade Book have a price for them? If they are sub £20 each i might as well buy a couple of new ones, old ones look a bit naggered

Yeah I reckon your jets are getting iced up.
As I said mine were blocked up this morning on the way out for a nice carvery meal. Parked up in full sun to purposely thaw out the front of the car, all clear now even though it was still -1c

Split/break the joint on the wing, and use an air line on a jet to blast any sh1te back down the pipe, obviously blocking off the other 3 jets as you do so. Use plenty of hot water on the pipe before you try to split the join to soften it up a bit or you risk breaking things .......  :y :y :y

Cheers all, could be ice, drivers side, right hand jet clogged up on the way back (was working fine, then one jet turned to a dribble)

Poked it and then both jets turned to dribble, stipped down, more poking and both returned to normal. Then driving in this morning (ok it was -2, jet bunged again)

I think something is floating around in there, hot water and some carb cleaner i think.

I keep saying i should buy a compressor, but i really, really should!

Andy - Joint on the wing? Not sure what you mean?  :-/ Do you mean the pipe that runs from the tank along the passenger side to the scuttle?

When i did take the jet off, there was a ball bearing at one end, which fell off  :( But when i used the jet, water did not blast out so hope its ok.

I suppose you could always try tipping in neat screenwash,to see if it would melt any ice if any, suppose it depends on how much water is still left in the bottle though, just mind your paintwork. ;)

Yes! IIRC when I fitted facelift washers to my car there is a join in the pipe along the wing somewhere.

Astra G's appear to have the same washer nozzles if you ever 'browse' scrap yards

I thought Omegas had heated windscreen nozzles? Mine has, 'cos when they gave up the ghost I had to go see my local Vauxhall dealer to get some. Not particularly cheap :(

Neat screen wash can cause more problems than it's worth. It can gum up the pump and the nozzles if you're not careful. Our firms MT workshop swear at the stuff as we put more in to keep the washer water liquid!

Nozzles might be heated but the pipes to them are not .... so you still get ice in the pipes which stops/reduces flow....

If they were going to heat the nozzles why not go the whole hog and heat the pipes as well ???  not rocket science .. :(

How would you do it ....as cheaply as possible? Electric trace heating, heat from the cooling system? It'd still need to be relatively unobtrusive.  :y :y
