Every now and then the engine temp soars and the overheat light comes on (usually the temp is held quite well just above the mid-point on the gauge). Checking the coolant header tank the water in it is at the right level but not hot - and doesn't appear to be under any pressure. Starting up after a 10 - 15 minute rest and all is well for the next few weeks/months (there doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when it does it)!

I'm guessing a sporadically sticking-shut thermostat. Is there any way of proving or disproving this? It is a fair old job to change one so I don't want to do this only to find the problem lies elsewhere!

Car is a 2000 (W reg) 2.5CD with 190k on the clock.

If I have to get a new one does anyone know the part number? Also, if I have to strip out half the bloody engine bay to change it, is there anything else in the vicinity that is worth doing at the same time?

Either thermostat or an airlock. Coolant in the header tank should circulate through the small pipe that runs through the throttle body. If you're not getting a little flow through here when it's up to temperature it will not bleed air out of the system. Maybe the little pipe is blocked?
