Aux belt jumped off, what should I check
« on: 11 January 2010, 09:40:30 »

Aux belt has jumped off accompanied by a bit of grinding then a lot of squeeling. Battery light on, a few seconds later overheating so shut down and coasted to a stop. Just waiting for the recovery man to come and get me!.

I am assuming I've got a seized pulley somewhere as the aux belt is <10k miles old amd didnt break (in fact still looks good as new).

Water pump changed20k miles ago along with cambelt.

So once it gets back to the garage I  will get them to check all the pulleys for wear/bearing failure , plus the alternator and water pump.

Anything else that needs checking as a consequence ? e.g. is it worth having the cambelt checked ?

With the belt off the engine ws still running fine, just got hot very quickly due to no water pump .

Cheers for any advice

Sounds like the tensioner bearing has gone. Can be bought seperately from VX. From front of engine, top left hand of aux belt route, undo with a 15mm spanner

That was my thought too, RAC man agreed 'This isnt going anywhere'

Hopefully the belt hasnt damaged anything else when it came off. At least thats an easy fix.

Thanks for the pic, makes it easy to work out the fix  :y

Could be anything - whilst the belt is off, simply spin each pulley :)

check the cambelt cover for signs of damage or heavy contact. If there is, get cambelt looked at.

Not without a lot of help but thanks for the offer. I'll just drop it down to BVS , they can have the fun of fixing it in the cold while I go home for a nice cup of coffee  ;)  No way I'm doing anything mechanical in this cold !

Its probably the auxilliary belt tensioner bearing as already said. About £30 and 5 mins to fit. Would save yourself a lot of money.
