Misfire
« on: 16 January 2010, 20:47:20 »

My 1999 2.5 is a moneypit of a car. Various oil leaks resulting in a new cambelt - £1,100, various problems at last MOT including failed ABS unit - £1,000 and so on!

This is definately the most unreliable car I have ever bought. Trouble is I like it when it works.

Now a misfire - my local garage found water in one of the plug wells. They dried it out and car ran ok until it rained again. The misfire came back

I have removed the scuttle as the foam insulation was soaked, causing water to drip onto the plugs.

Think I have sorted out the leak but my garage also said it might also be a lead breaking down.

My question is can anyone offer advice as to the easiest way to replace them as I can only just about see the DIS let alone get to it.

It could be a lead, dis pack or plugs. I find it easier to remove the plenum and skuttle to get at the dis pack, makes routing the leads easier :)

The prices you have paid mate are way over the top I'm afraid :(
I have found putting some sealer around the two rubbers that go over the wiper splines then put the scuttle on so that the sealant sticks to the back of the scuttle seemed to stop the water wetting the sponge. Maybe worth a go.

I would get rid of the water first try and stop the water going into the plugwells, if the problem is still there, test the leads with a multimeter, if ok, go with the cheapest first, Plugs :y

Thanks for the advice.

When I took off the scuttle there were no rubbers on the wiper splines. Are they special or would a suitable sized rubber washer work?

Showing my ignorance, but where and what is the plenum? My other cars are a '79 Spitfire and a '95 Rover 111 - these I understand.
