New ECU question
« on: 13 January 2010, 20:00:58 »

Hi, just had a brand spanking new ECU fitted today ,everthing seamed fine until about 10 miles on the way home the car started to run horrible. When i stoped at some lights i noticed the idle was ranging from just below 500 up to 700(approx!!!),there were no warning lights on ,temp was fine at 85 ish, fans cutting in at 90 .
So once home i phonned the garage who told that the ECU needs to learn ,so i asked how long does this take, the answer was 100 miles!!!.
Is this correct or is there a problem lurking???

So the idle problems could be correct then, ok,i shall do the 100 miles or so and see,as forthe reason for the new one,i had trouble with starting,it was to do with the throttle ,just kept on clicking ,so i did replace the whole housing first but no change,so had to resort to getting it plugged in.
And thats when the tech guy said its your ecu matey(while rubbing his hands and jumping up and down ,also cartwheels!!!)

ECU should learn a lot more within 100 miles, the grand master will be along shortly :y

Sorry but he did not give me any codes, i did try myself befor it went in to get the codes but to no avail as the Ecu was having none of it,as the throttle was flicking in and out it was messing around with the ecu,or the other way round.!!!
All i can say that it went to the garage not working and know it is,not sure about the being had bit.
I have kept the original unit so if anyone knows someone who can test them, i would like to know what went wrong.

It would have been nice if the garage had given you the codes.  When you say you tried reading the codes how did you try to read them

Lets consider a scenario...

...new car rolls off the production line, onto a transporteer, to the dealership and into the hands of a customer....at which point he says, its running shite....dealer replys, dont worry it needs to learn for 100 miles....

It will adapt but, it dont need to learn.

Interestingly your original symptoms sound like MAF sensor but, hey ho

just out of curiosity does the pedal trick work now with the new ecu.  And I would take heed to MDTM - he's a very intellectual person when it comes to Omegas.  BTW I'm no being patronising, just trying to help. :y

Yeah thats a fair coment,i was a bit taken back when they said give it the 100 miles learning curve, but all i can do is try it,as for the maf sensor, would it not be the same now if it was the maff sensor ?, the car would only start wih the throttle housing poteniometer disconnected.

Remember this....an ecu is little more than a micro processor and associated ancilaries.....given that it started and ran at all (all be it hard to start) sudgests that at least the micro was running and pretty much all the ancillaries
