whining/droning noise front of car
« on: 18 January 2010, 06:30:37 »

hi guys
having a problem with a whining noise at front of my car, also can feel it through the steering wheel, the noise sounds like the hub bearings. sounds realy bad from 40 to 30 mph it is definatelly a sound of something that turns. so checked both front hub bearings theese were renewed last March they seem ok, car drives fine no vibration at front just the whining noise between 30-40mph.
getting a bit frustrated now , :'(as cannot see what it can be) ---please help!!!!

Have you tried Jacking it up, put it on axle stands then spun the wheels.
Could it be;
Tyre noise from road surface.
Something rubbing against tyres in wheelarch.
Tyre tread separating from the tyre casing.
Incorrect tyre pressures.
Brake related/ deformed disk/ loose caliper etc.
No doubt many more will reply soon so drive carefully till you find the problem and sort it.

Sounds very much like a wheel bearing! You need to take it for a drive on a road with reasonably tight twisty bends and listen to see if the noise increases  or decreases while in the bend. For example: if the noise decreases on a left hand bend, and then reapears when you straighten up, it's a reasonably sure sign that the left hand bearing is worn out. (and visa versa)
Just because the bearings where changed last march doesn't mean to say they are now still okay. You may not notice any undue play when checking with the car jacked up.
It will still be worth checking the brake caliper assemblies etc are tight, but if these were rubbing on the disc it would be more of a scraping/rubbing sound you would hear.

Please post back the results of investigation   :y

hi guys
have recently changed front discs and pads thinking it was them being distorted --noise still there-- when doing discs checked both bearings --seemed ok,not sure what signs are for guffed bearings but seem to be turning fine,
calliper not loose have checked that.
when driving the noise is more definate when cornering left-- also when applying brake from 40 down to 30.
have not checked wheels though theese were the next step---lol

my moneys on the driverside wheel bearing . If you think of like this when your turning left the body role of the car goes to the driver side putting more pressure on that side. Does it get quieter when your turning right ?
