I dont know if you are aware but the ATF has to be checked when the gearbox is warm and with the engine running as Entwood said  ..... doesnt seem clear to me if the OP done it with engine running when reading through this post  :-/

Did you leave the engine running? or did you turn it off before you took the level plug out?

i left the engine running for 15 mins then took plug out whilst running and oil pissed out but was a orange brown colour and quiet thick

that sounds like the gearbox oil to me

what i dont get tho is wen i undone the plug a good liter and half come out,,, how could you get that much in there via top up plug!!??!!

so you recon i should keep engine running undo plug with it running and top up till it flows out?
how do i drain old oil tho ?

That doesn't sound good

Did it have any engine coolant mixed with it?

Is the engine coolant header tank clean? (is there ATF in the coolant?)

Two possible causes I have in mind :
1- radiator failure causing engine coolant to fill gearbox
2- gearbox ATF pump not working

[edit]early cars had a gearbox oil cooler in the end of the radiator, later cars have a separate radiator for the gearbox. I'm not sure whether V reg is beofore the change :-/[/edit]

ok, right i have gone down stairs and tested the car,,, still no gears!!  the lights next to the gear leaver are independant, and lighting up on each selected gear... not all lights are on at once,, also i have checked the water and there is not sign of oil in the water,,,,,,,,   just a quick one,, i used to own, a vauxhall calibra 4x4 turbo and was always told to drive with the same tyre pressure and tyre depth as it can mess up, the gear and transformer box. when i brought the omga it has 2 semi flat tyres on the drivers side, would this cause a problem???

put the car on a level surface, start it, remove the nut to the autobox, and put as much ATF in as you can, it should be level with the plug. (use Dextron III)

I think we have established that the engine was running when the level was checked but that dirty fluid ran out.

Trying to establish whether this car has a gearbox oil cooler in the radiator or a separate gearbox oil cooler.

Next line of enquiry was to ask if a failed thrust washer could eat the oil pump (or cause it to disengage from the drive on the torque converter).

now it getting complicated !!!!   talk about head f*ck lol    if i take this to a garage it going to be very expensive im sure, i called rac and there coming in the next hour so update you all soon

ok well rac come out and was more intrested in a semi flat tyre than the reason i called them out !!!! not impressed . he turned up and basically said that dont seem right !
he seems to think it is the gear box. he never put a diagnostic test on and when i asked he said there no need as there no noise or movement from the box.......  so i got it moved to me friends where he has a 3 car garage and its there till tomorrow then im going to put it on ramp and then check oil level and if no joy i going to remove it and get a replacement,,, can any one tell me if there are anything i should be carefull with and what bits should also be replaced as well as the box? also is there a manual i can download and print of to help me along rather than buying a haynes manual
