2.5v6 misfire and airbag light on (fault 82)
« on: 20 January 2010, 16:39:57 »

hi. hope this comes out ok its my first post, although been watching for some time. had my '99 omega auto 2.5 for about 9 years and just spent loads getting it thro the mot to find 2 days later airbag light and bad misfire. dont think theyre connected tho. had bosche centre look at it and they diagnose airbag fault 82 (side impact sensor) and....its got a bad misfire. my questions are -

airbag.-do the sensors fail on these (thought they were simple mechanical things) or is it more likely the wiring. any known problem areas in this respect.

misfire-. i,m told that there is no spark at leads 1 & 5 (not sure no.s are right) thats the front and rear one of the left side looking from the front. the misfire got substantially worse very quickly over say 5 miles of driving to and fro the garage. also the fuel cons has gone down to about 10 mpg. I suspect its the coil pack but is there any way of testing it (in situ or out). any reliable way of testing the plug leads just in case. also does the whole of the inlet manifold have to come off or just the top part.

gonna try and replace the coil pack and spark plugs myself so any ideas of a cheap but reliable source of new ones or is it best to by from main dealers..

failing that any one know of a good omega repair guy in the south east. (near RAMSGATE/Broadstairs area.)

fyi- car has 111,000 miles.  leads replaced about 3000 miles ago.

thanks for bearing with me so far. grateful for any replies
regards

Hello and welcome :)

Air bag light  - can come on if battery connected and an airbag / restraint plug disconnected either on purpose or by accident .. however requires a "tech2" session to reset the light.

Misfire .. sounds like it could be the DIS pack to me ... not difficult to change technically.... but access is limited !!

If you stick your location in your profile, you might be lucky and have someone near who can help ??

EDIT :

Just spotted the Ramsgate bit ...  don't think there is a tech2 near you then .. :(

I found the prices reasonable at the Bosch service centre I bought parts from a few years ago. Have you asked them to quote for the parts?

to be honest ive used bosch in the past and found them very good. this time im dissapointed that in the hour they charged me for they couldnt be more specific than saying no spark to 1 & 5, but we couldnt test the rest cos we cant get to them without stripping the engine.

I replaced the plugleads without stripping (the engine) so im surprised they cant test it more thoroghly and be more specific. shame cos id like to use them but not overly confident i'll get away without paying the value of the car, so wouldnt be economic.

thanks anyway

It might be worth pulling the plug leads off and checking the plugwells for oil. If the camcovers are leaking it fills the plug wells with oil and the leads/plugs breakdown and the misfire occurs.

If the leads/plugs are clean and dry, then the next thing to check is the seal around the scuttle/windscreen wipers... if this leaks the water drips straight onto the DIS pack and causes failure through corrosion.

Sorry, didn't make myself clear.

I meant to supply the parts (not fit them).

I was thinking that if they are easy enough for you to get to it saves finding another supplier (or getting scr*wed by buying rubbish on ebay).

I assumed that the reported missfire on 1 & 5 was the result of using diagnostic equipment. Tech2 perhaps........

thanks for the clarification. might try them for the parts.

had vauxhall do the cam covers two years ago so hope they should be ok but thanks for the tip on the oil.
I have started to strip the car (gave up for a mo cos cant get the throttle cable off its pin (clips removed) without damage. I noticed that the removable plastic bit (scuttle panel)? has sponge under it which is soaking wet. maybe it is leaking onto the coils.

btw, how can i be sure its not the oxygen sensors, as the misfire occured just after i filled up at my local supermarket, which has had contaminated petrol last year i think.
