An annoyig thing since my dad and I got the car (apart from leaking cam covers and faulty crank sensor!!) is that the drivers door won't lock or unlcock with the central locking - you have to use the key and turn manually.

It's not so bad (except in the dark) and also that if you forget to unlock using central locking before manually unlocking the drivers side - the alarm goes off!  Que frantic key pressing!

Before going and changing the motor - is there anythgin else I can try - maybe bit of lube/grease or cleaning somewhere to loosen it up?

If you remove and dismantle the motor, measure the resistance of the normally closed contacts on the microswitches, you'll probably find one is many ohms.

Change the switch, Maplin or similar for less than £2, should all work again.

Sounds like good info Mike - but as I'm utterly incompetant when it come to electrics, I doubt I'll be abelt o find the microswitches you mention, let alone measure the resistance across them....

On mine I achieved a brief respite by removing the torx screws in the end of the door one by one and liberally spraying wd through the holes. That fix lasted about 6 months, and when the motor got lazy again I got a replacement from darth loo knee which took roughly an hour to fit.

When you did this, did you do it through the door car at all or did you remove the door card first?

Just stuck the wd straw through the screw holes in the open end of the door.

I also had success with WD, but didn't even remove any screws, just poked the straw down alongside the knob, under the handle and into the latch!
