2.2 engine rattle
« on: 22 January 2010, 18:15:59 »

There's a rattle on my 2.2 which is annoying me.
It sounds like it could be valve train but not too sure as it's almost impossible to locate.

I've changed the cam belt with the water pump, tensioner and rollers a couple of months ago. I sorted an exhaust manifold/studs issue a couple of days ago so it's not that. I removed the aux drive belt but that made no difference.

From cold it starts and there is a slight lifter noise for a moment then all quiet and the engine is sweet, then once it gets to running temp a ticky rattle starts and remains. If the revs go much above idle the noise vanishes.

I'm at a bit of a loss here, if it was the cam belt stuff surely it would be there from cold? I used a Contitech kit and quality water pump. If it's the lifters surely they should get quieter at running temp?

Getting a bit narked with it now  ::) Any suggestions anyone? Cheers. :y

when did you last change the oil, may be dirty oil lifter or blocked., if you take the top off and have a look at the crank and tapits make sure that there in no old oil stuck in there.

Yeah, thanks guys.

I thought about both of these. The oil and filter were changed when I did the cambelt in October. I may try the lifter treatment and I guess another oil change cannot hurt.

What seems strange is the fact that the noise only begins at full running temp  :-? Lifter problems are 'usually' worst when cold - unless anyone knows differently. I may just take the front cambelt cover off and have a visual inspection to check all is well there before I go much further.

Any further help/suggestions would be appreciated.  :y
