rattling from rear suspension/boot area
« on: 09 January 2010, 13:31:56 »

I have just bought the front wishbones and will have them fitted next week, but now have a slowly worsening metallic rattle from the rear of the car.

On poorly surfaced roads, there is a rattling to match the imperfections in the road which is getting progressively worse-I assume this is rear bushes, but any ideas anyone?

I also find I can feel the gear selector shaking about a bit with the road surface if I rest my hand on it-is this related?

Replies much appreciated  :y

Could be your donut bushes, same knocking symptoms that I had.

Thanks for responses.

Just been out in it on dry roads with new tyres and the wandering rear is very noticeable, so symptoms are:

Rattling from rear end of car in time with bumps on road
"Loose rear handling"
Some take up in rear end on turning left and right/vagueness
Road surface can be felt through the gear selector

Does this help with diagnosis?

Knowing my luck it will be about four separate things to mend....

Advice gratefully received  :y

I've had my wishbone bushes, link rods, steering idler and shock absorbers replaced. I still have wandering so am going to look at the rear suspension bushes next. Don't know could be same in your case?

I've done both sides trackrod assemblies and the steering idler, wishbones are being done next week-parts ordered.

I can feel the rear being loose and the rattles confirm this-is it bushes, then??

No, the rear end tramlining could be related to the rear suspension bushes. I'll have to let the experts diagnose the rattle as I don't know.

Could be two separate issues.

Had the springs etc checked on the ramp by several people, car sits level and is now much more solid on the road after the wishbones and 4 wheel alignment has been done.

I have been able to replicate the rattling noise on the ramps-both handbrake cables are knocking against the rear suspension arms and if I waggle them, I get the same metallic rattle.

I wonder if this will be the first repair that will be easier to do than I first thought  :-/ ;D

welung666 is looking at it tomorrow and will sort a cure-let's hope that is the cause of the rattle  :y
