on plod cars its fitted to help the cooling system as they sit for long periods just ticking over so the water pump isnt doing all the work.

could this be why it appears to run cool at about 85 degrees then and the bottom hose appears cooler.

cheers

bottom hose is not cold but not quite as hot as the top hose. also you could be right about air lock as coolant low came up on display.

Lol.....ok, shall we begin

The aux coolant pump has nowt to do with plod .....it simply gets hot water into the matrix faster while the stat is still shut.....it helps pump nice hot water from the head through the matrix. It was fitted to MV6's and pretty much all the 2.6 and 3.2's

As for the 2 pipes being a different temp....thats a good thing.....because if you pass hot water into a heater....and blast cold air over it the water will cool and the air heat up.....hence one pipe should be colder when its working ok  :y

Simples...Squeek

If that's with the heating set to 'hot' and the cabin blower on, it's only to be expected.

The matrix is a heat exchanger; hot water in, cold air in, hot air out, slightly cooler water out.
If the return hose were a lot cooler than the feed hose, it might point to reduced flow through the matrix, but a bit cooler is just what I'd expect if you're taking heat out to warm the cabin.

If you hold the revs up at say 2500 for a minute or two, you should see the temperature difference get less, as you'll be pumping the hot coolant through the matrix at a higher flow rate, so it will have less chance to cool on its way through.

***must type faster  ;D***

Turn your ignition on and you should be able to hear and feel the pump running. If it's not running, grasp the pump the palm of your hand and gently flex the electrical connector up and down, side to side with your thumb. If it starts vibrating then it might be like mine and have worn brushes that do not properly meet the commutator. If its not spinning of course, instead of aiding hot water flow around the matrix the static impeller will be restring it, so you either get a new or used replacement pump (90566929), or undo the 4 cross head screws, let the impeller and small washer drop out and see how your heating performs without it.

The bottom hose does not seem to get as hot as the top hose is this right or am i going to get further problems.

Thanks

As previously stated, that means the radiator is dispersing, or radiating away, excess engine heat. Same as the inlet and outlet of you home central heating rads should be about 10-15 degrees different.
