V6 problems v BMW 2.5TD problems.
« on: 25 January 2010, 23:29:56 »

Having a 2.5 V6 and always getting problems with the cam covers and breathers I wondered if changing to a version with a 2.5 BMW TD would still have me pulling my hair out annually.

I know what the Cam cover and breather problems are with the V6 and how to sort them having done it twice now with the proper OEM bits and the proper instructions and the proper torques etc. But its a pain.

Are there also niggly problems with the BMW 2.5 TD as well? As I am contemplating changing over.

not to many off the top of me head,
1, fuel pump in tank cand die which you wont know about till it gets under 20 litres, easy fix though,
2. glowplugs can be fine one moment then expire just when you need them, usual clue is a slight missfire on starting from cold when one has failed
3, max 4.5k oil and filter changes more often if chipped
4.when std tune they are slow and not the best economy for a diesel, chipped its a damn good engine
5 autos are slugs!!!
may be acouple more but at this time of the morning i cant think of them!! :y

Had my td 11 years, 95k now, only engine problems have been one set of Gloplugs 5 years ago.! Go figure!
Gives me a warm glow reading about all the various problems of the petrol models, esp. the V6's, .

i'd stick with your V6, you know its history  :y

Trouble is with TD, if you get an abused one, its very hard to get it back to mint again, unless your really handy with the tools.

Only other one i can think to add is the TD should never be allowed to over heat, if it has, they can crack heads.

Yep, finding a good one that's been looked after as mentioned here, regular oil changes.
Stopped doing them 2001 so not many to be had, well Facelift one's anyway :y

If you go for a TD (makes alot of sense to me, and I love my MV6!) then don't chip it of it's an auto (unless an AR35 box???) - it'll die a dishonourable death inside 1000 miles.
Get a manual and enjoy more power and better mpg.

Had a conversation the other day about which Omega I would keep, if I had to part with one.
Now forgetting the obvious different in MPG between the two.......The 2.2 would have to go :'( even though it's smoother and quieter to drive, I just love :-* the chipped TD and can't bear to part with it.

Mick :y

Edit No I haven't got a car for sale.......yet!

If a TD has been abused, the chains will be shot.  Officially a sump and head off job to replace (sod of a job).

If the engine does let go, and it seems a fair few do, its normally spectacular - ie, conrods making a break for freedom.

Autos chew gearboxes, even if unchipped.

They silt up their rads badly.

The waterpumps were designed by a particularly thick german. They fail, which causes overheating. Don't let this lump overheat, it will do a lot of engine damage.

The viscous fans fail. Take them off, throw them away.

Change the oil at least every 3000 miles. The recommended 4.5k miles is too long :o

The aux tensioners seem to fail quickly, as do the alternators.

Temp sensor in FIP tends to fail. New FIP wrong side of £1k, not sure if sensor can be changed on its own.

Lift pump in tank fails.

Thats about all I can think of specific to the TD
