V6 engine swap
« on: 14 January 2010, 09:53:51 »

Hi everybody.
I would like to thank you all for previous help.
I have another question. I left country for cca 2 months, but I didn´t expect so hard winter. So my Omega got totally frozen. I don´t know how bad it is, but I have a chance to buy 3.0 V6 engine. And since I have many problems with my current engine, I would like to. So, is it worth it? Is it hard? what else do I have to get?
I have 2.5V6 from 1994 (over 240000km) manual transmission and I would like to buy 3.0V6 from 1998 (around 80000km) automatic transmission. I would like to use my manual transmission, is it ok? I can get ECU and exhausts, but I am not sure about wiring, gauges, cooler etc.
Any help will be appreciated :)

Most items from the 2.5 and 3.0 are interchangeable. You'll have to swap the flywheel / driveplate over (use new bolts!) and also fit a spigot bearing in the end of the crank of the engine from the automatic donor.

ECU mapping is apparently the same, so you should keep the one from the manual car as it will be correctly configured for the gearbox. Apart from that, you should be able to keep all the ancillaries on the engine and just unplug on the big multi-way plug behind the battery.

Thanks a lot. So all I need is the engine + flywheel + drive plate? That is awesome :) So engine will be (hopefuly) fixed, now only fix ABS unit and maybe I will be able to ride :)
Just a question, I have read somewhere, that it is better to swap 2.5V6 exhaust manifold for 2.6V6, is this the same (3.2 for 3.0)? I would also like to ask about EGR, which I am planning to blank on 2.5, any problem with 3.0? :)

Hi again :)
I would like to ask another question. Since my Omega is very rusted, I would like to buy a new body, put engine mentioned above in it and rest of parts take from my recent car. But this body is also from automatic Omega and I would still like to use manual transmission. Is it possible and is it easy to install manual transmission to body from automatic one?
Thank you for your help.

So you are buying an engine and a seperate body and using your current stead as a third party donor?

Would it not be easier and possibly cheaper and quicker to just by another complete omega :-? :-?

I would like to buy new one, it will be much easier :) But complete body costs me around 8000 Czech Crowns (it is about 420$), engine almost the same which can make cca 900$ (with transportation etc). Omega in equal condition costs more than 2000$ here what I have found. So if it is possible for me to make it, I would like to build it myself :) But since I have very limited experience with cars - I am mostly driver and biggest experience was taking out the engine from VW Golf II - that seemed very easy, but I know I cannot compare it with Omega :) - I cannot imagine how much work it can be and what problems to expect...

Ooops, my bad... Forgot to mention it. But it really flatters my English ;) Czech Republic here :) Big engine cars are now cheap here, because they are not popular now (and big gasoline engines... :) ). But for me, nothing can compare the ride and sound :) Unfortunately, as I have young familly now, they are not cheap enough. Just for curiosity, how much does Omega cost in UK? :)

Depending on what your after four pot or V6 and trim level, you can pick up nice examples from as little as 1000-1500 or spend much more if you wish :y

And your english was spot on always help on here for you mate and if you don't know the word just describe it or tale a picture :y :y

Well, so maybe I will move to UK :) I must admit I would like to :)
For Omega, I have 2.5 V6 now, so I would like to 3.0 V6, or as I saw some youtube clips, V8 ;) Trim level doesn´t matter so much for me :)
Maybe you shouldn´t mention taking a picture, or as soon as I start the conversion, I will flood this forum with photos :) I might even know what is what in my native language... :) But I am looking forward the experience :) I just hope I will not end up with 2 empty bodies and one big heap of parts :)

Please, how is it with changing trans? :) Can I easily put manual transmission to body that used automatic transmission? Or is there some welding, modification etc.?

OK, thanks for all the info :) I have decided to buy all parts, but let mechanics to do the job :) I just opened the hood and something told me, it will be unwise to try it myself :)
So another question :) The engine I am buying (3.0 V6) was stored out of the car for cca 2 years. The seller claims it was stored in dry garage. What should I check before I buy it? I am planning to make cambelt kit change, but what can go wrong? Also is there something what should be made while the engine is out to help its performance?
Thanks for all ideas :)
