Td oil leak from EGR valve
« on: 29 January 2010, 14:33:03 »

My 98 td elite has an oil leak from the hole on the egr valve.
I have removed it and cleaned it a couple of times now but after a couple of days the alternator is covered in oil again.
Any ideas why it would be blowing oil out or how to sort it.

Most egr valves have a seal between the main body and the vacuum diaphragm part which sould keep the oil mist in the main part of the egr valve, where it gets sucked into the engine and burnt. Over time the seal starts to fail/go hard and oil starts to find its way into the vacuum diaphragm and then out through the breather hole which is normaly at the bottom. The valve can still work even with the leaking seal.just makes a mess of your engine bay over time.

Its a design feature added to later TDs.  There should be a small bit of pipe to stop it misting on the coolant hose (and softening it), but many are missing
