« on: 30 January 2010, 00:27:05 »

hi all , just spent £700 on new cam covers cam shaft oil seals cambelt kit water pump etc , it solved all oil leaks but one which is a drip from the 2 bolts hanging underneath bellhousing of gearbox. i would say its engine oil and cant see any leaks from engine bay not even from rear of camcovers.
any ideas ??

Drips from there are often from anywhere .. as the oil runs down the back of the engine and just ends up there ... :(

Given you've done the common ... cam covers, The only two things I can think of  are...

1) on the gearbox (auto) are a couple of rubber "plugs"  whip them out and see if any engine oil is in that area behind them, if it is .. could be the rear crankshaft seal.. :(

2) If that is dry .. then a further possibility are the pipes to the oil cooler, if they are seeping the oil could run down the rear face of the engine and end up there .. :(

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will pass by and correct any errors of mine .. :)

You need to say what the car is by amending your Profile so OOFers can then adapt the answers to fit the car type.
Best thing to do would be to give it a good wash off, including the gearbox area, I use a power washer without any problems, and then allow it to dry. If it is hot before you start it will dry fairly quickly. Park it on level ground prfeferably on 4 axle stands so you can get underneath to inspect it. A big cardboard box opened out makes a good clean mat so any oil drip locations can be seen clearly and accurately as the oil will drip vertically.
As you have spent a fortune doing the usual to cure the leak this will be your next task.
Oil from the bellhousing area could be any of these,
Rear Crankshaft seal
Gearbox Input shaft seal (manual)
Torque Converter (auto)
It could also be any pipe union, a cracked pipe or any combination of them!
Have you smelt the oil? What does it smell like because ATF, Gearbox and Engine oils all smell very differently.

Just noticed the same leak i think on my 2.0l 16v manual, had a quick look yesterday and think its gearbox fluid, it looks like its coming from betwen the gearbox and bell housing so think its the input shaft seal, but am having a proper look today
