Cruise stalks can be had £32+vat from VX, I didn't listen and bought an ebay £25 delivered cheapie, which failed after two months/6,000 miles and started randomly selecting resume; the replacement after sending it back does not feel much better and rattles slightly too.

If doing the job, surely £32+vat is worth it?  They do wear and fail, but they are easy enough to swap, so you could fit a £5 secondhand one if short of funds, then when it goes replace with a nice new one......from VX not ebay 

I learnt that what OOF said was absolutely right; the hard way.

Is it now OK to use second hand stalks? The last time we mentioned them, we heard:-
For crying out loud, how many times do I have to say it 
[size=16]FOR CRUISE STALKS, BUY BRAND NEW[/size]
and:-
second hand is false economy, full beam tends to wear and come on when braking a heavy.

I wanted to sell an OOFer one for a Fiver, but on here he was advised against it, and so he spent £48.65 on a new one, now it seems the advice is:-

Ideally, I would suggest buying a kit from a breaker, then getting a new stalk from a dealer - Cruise for way under £100 is a bargain in my book.

But we all know people won't buy the new one until the existing one fails, when they have the one from the kit for free.


Buying 2nd hand stalks IS false economy. Maybe many of us need to learn the hard way (as I did).  I personally don't give a witch's tit whether people buy new or 2nd hand, all I am trying to do is relay my (not insignificant) experiences with these cars

Fair enough, I do appreciate your opinions, I suppose in an ideal World, we should all scrap our stalks & replace with new, as they are the same age as the ones in the Breakers.
You are right, People will not put new ones on if the used ones are OK. Thanks for the comment.
Oh, and £32 isn't bad, sounds like some Dealer is charging 50% VAT, I knew there was a reason for not trusting them!

when i bought mine off darth came with the stalk also,only thing i had to get from vx was clutch switch,doddle of a job to do,never looked back,use it every day(get better economy).

Just before you get to splash the cash, be aware that the resume feature is a bit impatient to say the least, often resulting in a kick-down and hearty charge towards the rear of the car in front.

If like me you were expecting to exit a roundabout and gently regain speed at the press of a button you might be dissapointed.

Then again, it could be down to my 2nd hand stalk and cheapskate bending of mounting brackets

My experiences are...

use a 2nd that came with your kit....cos youve got it.

WHEN that fails buy a new one from Vaux.

I bought an ebay pattern, and it is poor, getting indicator to lock indicating right is damn near impossible.

yes the 'same age' one in your car is working fine.....but it hasnt been disturbed which is what I think starts to see them on their way.

IF money is tight, and a 2nd hand is cheap enough, then why not, may not be great, may put you on for a while, may be false economy but when pennies are tight it can be your only option.

Ive used 10 year old 2nd hand, new pattern and new vauxhall and there is a massive difference between them.

I got my second hand stalk from a breaker, when I was getting an ECU and keyreader, so he chucked it in for free. It has worked OK for the last couple of years. Hey some will be lucky, some are not, it all depends if the driver of the breaker used his indicators frequently.

brand new ones feel sooooooo much smoother to use. The second hand onei got was clunky and horrible to use. Brand new one feels much nicer to use, and is silent, its worth paying the £35 just for that

I think the cruise stalk is fitting in with the ethic of the car......it has been replaced complete twice and still does not feel right

I have a 98 2.5V6 CD and want to fit cruise control. Searched and it seems possible but how much of a pain is it to fit? Are there any how to guides here? Will it be expensive?

I have a complete 99 2.5 V6 CD(x) in E.London for braking (failed engine), so if you do not mind some disassembly you can pick all the parts you need...
