Just had my system pressure tested as i was losing a bit of coolant somewhere, good news is that the head is fine, but found i am losing pressure elsewhere, found out it was comimg from the HBV ,very tiny leak,but enough to make me have to top up coolant every 100 miles!!!!.
Looks like a sod to get on it to change it, any help would be appreciated.
Also has anyone got one that they would like to pass on for a few golden nuggets!!! :) :y

A common problem, and fiddly but not hard to do.

They break often, so I would source new to be honest.

There is a lot of slack in the coolant pipes, Ive found you can unhook the HBV and move it sideways enough to get molegrips etc on to remove the clips, then just swap and replace.

some remove the scuttle for a tiny bit more access.

ok, thanks for that, i have taken a look, looks bloomin tight, i cant get me hands in there,also if and when i manage to get the pipes of,will i lose much coolant?

I successfully replaced my HBV in about 3 hours afer removing the scuttle and skinning a few knuckles and generating a few bob for the swear box ! :-)
But as a novice mechanic and tackling my first job on the Omega, I was dead chuffed I managed to swop it over ok. Definitely more room to work with when scuttle is removed. Good luck. Also I paid stealers £36 for new genuine VX HBV unit.

Just been on the blower to my local vx, they have quoted me £34.55 plus vat???.
Not sure i want to take a chance on a aftermarket one, i see you can get one for around £19 delivered, but you pay your money you take your chance, dont want to lose more skin by doing it again quite so soon lol :-/

so to recap then, you can get the clips off and the valve out without removing anything?

although the 1st few I did I removed bit for better access.

Scuttle off makes all the difference and probably adds no more than 10 minutes to the job . (But if you do it following the 'How To' guide here, and then lay it upside down out of the way, remember that the little half-turn plastic clips are not captivated! They fall out unless you take them out first!) I also whipped off the vac pipe between the plenum and the servo - again, a few seconds extra work that makes all the difference to how much knuckle and forearm skin you donate!

While I had mine off I replaced those nasty hose clips with proper Jubilee clips. Makes re-assembly SO much easier! And a bit of universal lubricant (spit!) helps the hoses slide on nicely.

think i had two kuckels that still had skin on em after i was done

the other 8 were screwed

I was always taught NOT to use jubilee clips on water hoses. They do not expand as the water heats up and dig into hoses causing splits and leaks. They can also cause damage to the "pipe" the hose is on .. especially the plastic ones on a radiator.

That is why fancy spring clips are used .. to allow for expansion .... if jubilee clips were the answer .. don't you think the makers would fit them ??? :)
