P0170 + lack of power - anyone had it ?
« on: 27 January 2010, 00:29:32 »

Hello all!!

I had the code P0170 twice and cleared it out, took out the MAF for clear contacts and no more alarms but lack of power after 40mph.

Anyone had this problem before ?

Tks

Proz, Thanks.

I got the car this morning going to the work.
Disconnected MAF and start without problems, but foot down and no power.
Came back to park. connected MAF.
Car went normal but no power when running more than 40.

When i had my problems i was getting the code P0170 and then something about lean .... which i assume was the mixture and hence why it was gutless ..... i did post on here about it probly a year ago but at that time no one was able to say it was the maf because there was no maf code ... i took the chance cause i was offered a genuine maf for 35 quid and it cured it ....  Can you get any live data as to wat the maf is reporting at idle and say 2000 revs and i can compare it to mine now ??

This is the problem i had .... but because there was no " maf " code in diagnostics it was thought to be ok .....  then it was suggested on here that i try the maf .... as said i found a genuine one cheap and took the chance and worked for me .... was like driving a different car  :y

MAF needs to be totally goosed before you get a MAF related code, and MAF codes can also be spurious due to other faults.

Remember the code is not saying "the MAF is faulty" it's saying that the ECU software considers the input from the MAF to be inconsistent with the other inputs it is getting.

On the MAF failures that I have seen, the MAF has simply lost sensitivity so that it is still giving plausible readings but the fuelling has gone far enough out for the car to be running poorly and giving fuel trim fault codes.

Easiest way to diagnose is to substitute a known good MAF from another car. Before that, though, make sure there are no air leaks in the induction and exhaust systems, that the air filter is not clogged. Check the simple (cheap) things first. :y

San - I see you are not too far away from me. If you'd like me to have a look over it with the Tech 2 I'd be happy to help.

I had a similar issue on, of all things, a petrol powered Transit a few years ago. No code on diagnostics but I recognised the symptoms from when I had a Vectra fall foul of Tesco's bout of dodgy fuel, so I changed the MAF and all was well. Going by your symptoms and the other replies, I would also recommend getting a new MAF.

Sure i rad a post not to long ago saying that its actually the same MAF unit in some of the omegas as it is in the transits (well some of them). :y

This exactly what happened to me, i suspect mine was causing overfuelling which eventually goosed the cat. I had a new cat and a MAF and it's like driving a different car.

Not aware of that but it might be. The petrol Transit had the same 2.0l DOHC engine found in the Scorpio.

hello !!!

Finally changed my MAF with a new one and everything working fine (until now)

To help others a list with problems:

- Code: P0170
- Car with lack of power
- Start but it fails when driving.
- Clean up the MAF didn't help only stops the light going off.

Thanks for all replies  :y :y
