Oil gunge
« on: 09 February 2010, 21:42:17 »

Today i opened the engine oil filler cap and found it to be all sort of white gunge on the underside of the cap, also the top of the filler pipe was also coated in the creamy gunge. Is this normal as i thought this would suggest oil and water but i read somewhere on the forum last night about cleaning the creamy gunge off during an oil change :question

it should be nothing to worry about as long as there are no other issues, its referred to as 'mayo'.

its caused by short runs, not letting the engine get hot enough. Some oils also mayo much more than others, Castrol for instance is very bad for mayo. GM Semi Synth is a lot better.

I would do an oil change with some fresh GM oil, and take it on a long hard run  :y

V6's get a lot of it in the winter especially when only doing short runs. Take the cap off and clean it, take the neck off and clean it, put the neck in the boot and fit the cap directly to the cam cover. I only used the neck when I had my V6 to top the oil up and it went straight back in the boot ;) :y

Hi, I think this is quite normal on the Miggy especially if you do lowish miles.

Asuming youhave the V6 engine ... this is common.  The oil filler neck sits in a relatively "cold" part of the engine and so gets a fair bit of condensation inside it .. this emulsifies and causes the gunge.

It is worse with lots of short trips and ceratin oils.

A few decent length runs to get the whole engine really hot usually sorts it .. as well as changing to VX semi-synthetic 10W/40 oil . :)

You'll find that's a recurring feeling. There are loads of very helpful people here who have helped me by way of opinions, advice, parts, etc.
This is a very helpful and invaluable source of information.

Worth updating your profile with engine in your Omega, i noticed you had an Elite, which would be V6 or TD. Would help future diagnosis if you listed the engine  :y

I remember reading on a Frontera web site that the "mayonnaise" on the oil cap could indicate head gasket failure  - hope i'm wrong but it would be worth checking  :-?

.

I can indicate it, but more often than not its the poor oil / short runs. HG would give other symptoms as well like coolant loss  :y
