Diesel Not starting after new battery
« on: 08 February 2010, 17:20:45 »

Hi, I have done a search on here, but couldnt find waht im looking for,
I hade to have a new battery on saturday as the old one completely died after this the car which is a 98 2.5 td doesnt want to start, turns over and after a long while will start, once its been running and driven it starts when hot,
I didnt have any problems before changing the battery, I did find a blown 15amp fuse in the fuse/relay box under the bonnet, but this doesnt seem to have solved it, Im pretty sure it is to do with the glow plugs, but why would they go after changing the battery?
please help  :)

Might be worth checking the Glow Plug relay that feeds the GP's, its wired directly to the Battery, have you missed the lead off?.

The Relay also start to arc across its 2 contacts after a while, this can cause intermittant current feed to the plugs or in my case actually pit / arc the contacts together causing a intermittant short switching the plugs on and eventually killing the Battery.

you can do a simple test get a long piece of wire (6mm) touch glow plug 1 then touch the positive on batt for 10sec then try and start
this will rule out if GP's are at fault or the relay but be careful you must touch gp first then batt then off batt then off GP fast then start, if it goes it's a fuse or relay if not it's the GPs.
I know some might frown on this sort of move but ive done this on lots of diesels.

Sounds like a good idea to me providing you don’t sneeze and accidentally brush the live wire across the engine block!  ;D ;D :P

You could do that as a check, but I would recommend you do it at the relay output. Each Glow Plug is wired serperatly from the relay, so touching plug 1 with 12v from the battery means that the other 5 glow plugs are drawing there current through the GP 1's single wiring lead.

Sounds like the glow plugs were on the way out to begin with.  It's a good place to start :y

Thank you for your replies, have found out that I have three dead glow plugs, going to change them, all 6 just to be on the safe side :D
