Battery light staying on
« on: 09 February 2010, 19:00:06 »

Just tried to pop out and once I turn the engine over the battery light is staying on :-? I had this just before xmas and it faded on and off, I changed alternator and then had no more problems. But this time it stays on all the time, any quick checks I can do in the dark  ::) Need to be out by 8pm but dont fancy the battery draining while Im out driving in the lanes :o Im really going off Syd :'( :'(

I have tested the alternator and think the replacement has now died too. Have I just been unlucky or could there be something causing them to fail :-? This time it is a bit different as I charge battery over night, run kids to school  ( 15miles ) all ok, then car will turn off and re start. But if I leave the battery connected within 2 hours battery it is then dead. What would cause it to drain. I also have the old one I took off, could this be re conditioned :-/ Id hoped to sell Syd but Im sure he knows :o as everytime Im ready to place the ad something else fails and I have to delay selling him :D

Sounds to me like a rectifier has failed in the alternator and this is draining the battery when parked up. You might be able to replace just the diode pack, I suppose.

I would take the old alternator to an auto electrical specialist. They will probably be able to repair or exchange it. Changes are just fitting a new diode pack or regulator.

More importantly they should be able to test it afterwards to ensure it is 100%. :y
