Now Im more confused. Would the best thing be to clean the throttle body housing etc, see if that cures it.  If it doesnt then take the MAF off.  THe engine idles fine, its just when the car is driving along that I get the car with a spanner symbol, which has generated the fault code

I had the same error on the same engine. Spent ages looking for the sensor which is apperently built into the throttle body.??
Took the throttle body off and gave a good clean with carb cleaner. Been as good as new since with no errors.  :y

If it's sluggish then I doubt very much that it will be a dirty throttle body but it won't hurt to clean it anyway.

Giving it a run with the MAF disconnected, as Mark says, will be worth a try.

OK the plan for Saturday morning is to clean the throttle boy, and check the car.  Then Il give the car a run. .........then Il run it with the MAF disconnected.  By the way if it needsa new MAF, Im assuming it doesnt need to be coded to the car or anything daft like that ??? Its just a plug and go device I assume??

SOLVED AND SORTED :y :y

Followed the guide on here for cleaning the pipes and throttle body

The MAF was perfect, and so was the Air Filter

The butterfly valve had a line of carbon around the inside of the body, stopping it from closing properly.  The metal throttle body was brown and completely choked up, including the small hole which was blocked

The pipes had a bit of gunge in them

The air pressure was awful - practically non existent

Everything cleaned out using Carb Cleaner (Wynns) Jeeeez that stuff is good.  It cleaned everything, so all the stuff is cleaner than when it first left the factory.  I also found a good squirt of brake disc cleaner helped as well

The DBW plug was probably the trickiest thing to get out :-X but with a bit of prising it soon popped off

The air pressure is now perfect

The guide was invaluable!! :y :y

I dont have to plan overtaking 8 hours ahead any more LOL! ;D ;D

My fuel economy around town has gone from 18mpg to 27mpg! :y :y

I reckon that I could give the wheezing 6 pots a dam good run even now!!! ;) ;)

I hope some one else who has had the dreaded spanner through car symbol on their dashboard and it isnt the cam sensor or crankshaft sensor and is pulling their hair out like me, reads my posts and then heads for the MAF or throttle body housing
