Aux belt tensioner
« on: 22 February 2010, 09:02:11 »

Have just change the aux belt tensioner pulley and am still getting a rattle from it when you just touch the throttle. Could it be that the belt has maybe stretched a bit and the rattle is from the tensioner taking up that little bit of slack? No noise once the revs are up and even.

Not run without aux belt as yet but I am pretty certain that is where it comes from 99%
Cambelt due in about 6000 miles.

Have indeed. Got it at 117000 and now at 144000 that will be 2 years in a few weeks, so only a little over average. Just reaching the point where things need doing. Have ordered new pads all round today. Mot in 4 weeks  :y

Had a brief run with belt off and it sounds perfect.
Can the actual tensioner produce this noise or should changing just the pulley eliminate. Back to the question of belt?

Is it a new belt?
There were a batch of belts a while ago that were fractionally too short.

How's the bearing feel in the tesioner roller? How about carefully flipping the dust seal out and putting a little fresh grease in there. Carefull you don't distort the seal while removing it.

Have just changed the pulley so I know that is good.
Have not put a new belt on it. Just seeing if in theory the belt could of stretched over time and the tensioner is vibrating due to the small amount of slack.
It only rattles when throttle is just touched gently then it is quiet.

Rattle? or screech? I've just replaced my fan belt before I recieved complaints from the neighbours setting off at 6 in the morning & screeching up the road. A new belt is now silent!  8-) The old belt was pot hard and was well past its use by date.  ;D

Only a definite rattle. No squeeling whatsoever. I can see the point now. A slack belt would probably be slack over all the pulleys and therefor cause a squeel at some point.
Now back to the question of can the tensioner be at fault even with a new pulley?

Does the pulley spin smoothly?
and does the tensioner feel right when you compress it to put the belt on?
I can't really see it rattling unless something is loose.

Yes and yes. Everything seems perfect.
